Every month, there are tons of searches for the keywords 'dental discount insurance' - and this article provides the answer to the question that follows the searches. The question is, "Why can't I find any?"
The situation here is a typical mixing of words. Dental coverage plan actually falls into two groups - there are dental discount plans, and dental insurance - but at this point in time, you can find no such thing like dental discount insurance.
And this error is completely understandable. After all, there are certain forms of insurance that do offer discounts, on particular conditions. You might get a discount on your health insurance provided that you don't smoke, or your automobile insurance on condition that you have a clean driving record. But you're not going to get a provider that lowers your dental insurance plan for having a history of regular check-ups, or for consistent flossing.
One more reason of this misunderstanding is the manner the term 'discount' is used in dental clinics. As in, "After your insurance pays, your final bill is discounted to $190.00". They will apply the term 'discounted' in place of the term 'reduced'.
I have to admit that at the time I discovered this fact, it confused me at first - it looked sort of deceiving!. Then I learned that each profession reinvents terms and has its own jargon, and that this was the problem here.
So now we're left with the obvious question - do we have any hopes for dental discount insurance plans in the future? The only answer at this moment is, that it has been cited in conferences concerning the recent health care changes.
I intend to explain this in another writing. As for now, the only place the word 'discount' is put to use is with dental discount plans - but not with insurance, yet.
