Here's How You Can Successfully Overcome Your Panic Attacks

Posted by: nbaground on: January 25, 2010

I am a sufferer of depressive disorders and panic attacks. It takes almost everything I have everyday just to get up and be somewhat productive. Even though everything appears to be well with my life, the truth is it is a day by day existence with very little thought of actually getting better. Exactly what I hope for is just getting through the day. It's in this spirit that I provide the following suggestions. Keep in mind that I'm not a medical doctor and everybody should seek treatment if only to validate that you are not crazy!

Panic attacks come on at any time of the day or night. If you have ever been so scared and out of control, then you've probably had a taste of what an anxiety attack feels like to the typical sufferer. Ever feel as if you're in imminent danger and had to flee? That's precisely what a panic attack feels like. It comes on strong, scares the daylights out of you, and it's gone

Here are a few ideas on how to cope.

1. Take part in Your Treatment

Do not sit back and wait for relief to come by itself! You have to continue being active and aware of your mind and body's reactions to treatment. Be ready and willing to ask any and every question and to address each and every concern you have with your health care provider. Open lines of communication will certainly increase the chance of control and success.

2. Be Patient

Although a lot of patients respond within weeks or sometimes even days to therapies for panic attacks, no one reacts the same. Moreover, no known treatments for panic perform instantly. Be prepared to devote at least an entire two months following your initial course of treatment before you start judging its effectiveness. If you still haven't experienced the progress you were seeking, you can always talk with your provider to fine-tune your treatment plan .

3. Be Aware Of Side Effects

If part of your remedy involves medication, you will probably need to be mindful and provide a lot of feedback to the physician until the dose and type of medicine is determined. Make certain your physician explains to you the unintended side effects you might have to expect. Usually they get a lot easier to tolerate with time but it's important that you know what you should expect. Your doctor may well begin lowering your dosage, or trying alternate options if the side effects are pronounced or cannot be tolerated.

4. Join A Panic Disorder Support Group

If misery loves companionship, then a great source of support, relief and information for individuals who suffer from anxiety attacks can be found in the support group. Now I'm a big fan of support groups in that they have a tendency to validate problems instead of focusing on correcting or living with them. I do realize however that some people find great solace and support in these groups and for those people, please attend and enjoy. Most attendees will be discussing their experiences, their treatments and coping tips.

Just keeping these recommendations in mind and putting them to use during your treatment may help you feel much better and increase your odds of the treatment being effective.
