I strongly suggest holidays in Turkey. It is a wonderful country packed with diversity. No matter what your interests. If it is culture you seek, then Turkey history is dripping with antiquity which includes the renowned Ephesus, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. If it is sunshine you are longing, then the weather in Turkey is brilliant with coasts stretched across the Aegean and Mediterranean and if it is nightlife and a bustling lifestyle, then Istanbul or Bodrum will provide a wealth of nightclubs and restaurants to name just a couple of places. The holidays in Turkey have never annoyed us.
Bodrum is a convenient place to stay. You have many restaurants to choose from ranging from small bistros where you can get pizza, to expensive restaurants where you can try true Turkish food which is fabulous. In Bodrum itself there are several restaurants that look over the busy harbour where you can sit and watch the world go by. The evening view is spectacular with the sun setting and the fort lit up on the hill.
We stayed just near Bodrum in Ortakent which is much quieter although you still have the luxury of well stocked stores KIPA (owned by Tesco) and Burger King if the need takes you!. The smaller cities outside of Bodrum offer a quieter experience where you can sit by the water enjoying freshly caught fish whilst watching the fishermen and the little boats sail across the harbours. Other such villages including Bitez are based by the sea and so many of the restaurants are actually on the beach.
We decided to drive up to Ephesus when we are staying in Bodrum. Ephesus contains the largest collection of Roman remains in the eastern Mediterranean with only about 15% of it having been excavated. The ruins that are identifiable give some idea of the city's original splendour, the thought that people had walked the streets in 60AD is amazing and to walk along streets from the past and appreciate the architecture is a trip that I would strongly recommend.
Patara is a completely different experience set further south on the Mediterranean. You can see one of the best beaches you can imagine. Patara beach is 75km south of Fethiye and is around 20km long. When we went it was not crowded, had white sand and because it is 20km in length meant you could walk along the seashore until you found a point that you were happy with. The sea was warm and clear and we spent a few days there which is unusual for me, as I am not really a beach lover. Also Patara beach perhaps has the claim of the birthplace of Santa Claus. Work that one out if you can. Just back from the shore is an Amphitheatre. We visited this on a Sunday morning and had the whole site to ourselves. Impressive to be able to look around an Amphitheatre and not have to share it with anyone. You can in fact start to imagine what it must have been like back in the Roman days.
Along the coast from Patara is Kalkan which we used to visit regularly for an evening food. Kalkan is set up more for the tourist so you will find many shops, flats some very good roof top dining places where you can eat and look out to sea and a busy nightlife.
I love Turkey. I would suggest holidays in Turkey to anyone as it has so much to offer
