When it comes to choosing baby cribs, your very first priority will be protection. In this article we look at the varieties of cribs that are offered and what you need to search for to ensure that your baby will be protected.
Standard cribs are most commonly created from wood, although they may be plastic. They generally have sides which drop. If you will have the crib against a wall, you probably merely need one side to drop. If it will be in the middle of the room then you could select one with both sides that drop. Alternatively, round cribs are becoming well-known for middle of the room.
A few baby cribs have high posts in the corners and a nice cover that fits over the top like a four poster bed. This may look very stylish and give a traditional feel to the nursery.
A few baby cribs are designed to convert to a toddler sized bed later on when baby no longer needs the protection of an enclosed crib. This can save you money, although if you plan to have other kids then you might like to keep the crib for your new baby and purchase a new toddler bed.
If you buy a new baby crib it will almost certainly meet all of the safety regulations. However, you may get an older crib as present and if so you will have to check that it is still safe. Many people purchase baby equipment on eBay these days and even if it is new, it may come from countries where basic safety rules are not necessarily so strict.
Here is what you need to check if you are considering used baby cribs :
- The slats on the side should not be more than 2 3/8 inch apart. This is to prevent baby's head being trapped between the slats which is quite crucial. If you have an older used crib where one slat is loose or missing, do not use it.
- Corner posts should not be greater than the sides by more than 1/16 of an inch - unless the crib has the canopy, when the posts ought to be a minimum of 16 inches higher than the sides. This prevents baby's clothes or bedding being trapped on the corner posts and possibly becoming a strangulation risk.
- Check that the wood is smooth in order to avoid injury from splinters and see that there are no loose joints, brackets, screws or other fixings. Any paint or varnish used should be baby safe. This is not forever the situation with older or antique cribs.
- The bedding must fit into the base well. If you wish to buy a new mattress be sure it is the correct size. You must not be able to fit more than two of your fingers between the mattress and the sides of the crib.
Crucial safety measures you should consider in the manner that you use the crib:
- Do not leave toys, loose clothing or pillows in the crib while baby is resting. If there is something which your baby insists on keeping in the crib, take out item when baby is asleep.
- Do not let anything suspend into babies cribs. Especially be careful that the crib is not placed near slatted window treatments, drapes, bags or anything that baby could pull on or become entangled.
- If the crib has decorative bumpers they should be taken out as soon as baby is able to pull up to a standing position, to stop baby climbing on them and possibly falling out of crib.
