Well when I began attempting to find a repair for my Xbox 360 RROD, I realised I was overwhelmed by the different information to be found. You will find a million sites, each hawking their instructional materials (normally $24.95. You can get some for free) and there are also the multitudes of YouTube videos claiming to have located the miraculous cure. The 3 that I am going to review are what are considered the most famous (and many times most absurd).
Number #1 - The Towel Trick - It goes something similar to this: You take the hard drive off, encapsulate the entire unit in a towel to stop the excess heat from escaping, turn the console on around 15 minutes to cook (some instructions advise an hour), shut it down, unplug it for an hour, plug it back in and as promised it works. But why? I have not heard a reliable explanation yet. Here is one of the answers..."the system gets so incredibly hot that it melts the solder that was cracking to the induce the red lights to start with"..... Here's a couple of probable risks as talked about in the same information "could potentially damage other parts of the Xbox".... "The console could catch on fire it gets so hot". I've got to say I will rate this as the 2nd most silly Xbox 360 Red Ring of Death fix from the three in consideration. Advice: Do not use this repair.
Number #2 - The Ice Bath - I do not even desire to explain how to do this. Simply, a rubbermaid tub is full of ice water, some vinegar is put in, the Xbox 360 is unplugged and submerged in water/vinegar concoction. After so many minutes the console is removed, drained of water and immediately plugged back in. Need I say more. I actually heard about a kid who attempted this and was severely shocked. This as a lot of other fixes was presented as a youtube video. It is definitely quite reckless and really should be deleted. This fix is easily the most idiotic fix of the three in consideration. Suggestion: Don't even contemplate applying this repair for those who value your life.
Number #3 - X-Clamp Repair - This is actually the only genuine repair I've discovered thus far. It will be as fixed as it gets. Don't use it if however your Xbox 360 is still under warranty. Send the console back to Microsoft and let them honor the warranty. Having said that, should the seal is broken and/or it isn't under warranty this repair is the best choice. This is actually the repair in summary; you get into the console, remove the x-clamps, clean the existing thermal paste, put brand new thermal paste on, substitute the x-clamps by using screws and washers, reassemble the machine, overheat, allow it cool-down and it works on around 90% of the units. Advice: Take advantage of this Xbox 360 3 Red Light Error fix.
